The film follows a young Thurgood Marshall, the future first African American Supreme Court Justice, during one of his early, career-defining cases. Working for the NAACP, he defends a black chauffeur accused of sexual assault and attempted murder by his white employer in conservative 1940s Connecticut. He partners with a reluctant local Jewish lawyer.
